Abstract

Work has proceeded on the design of a mall stored-progra computer for use as a portable laboratory tool or as a compone t of a larger system. The computer, to be known as the LINC, has 1024 12-bit words of ferrite core storage, parall l binary arithmetic, built-in analog-todigital converters, two display scopes, and two magnetic tape transports of special design Programs are entered by means of a typewriter keyboard and are held on magnetic tape for subsequent use. The tape transports are block-addressed ran om-access units similar to those on the TX-2 computer but holding only 1024 256word blocks on 3-inch diameter reels. Use of the LINC in laboratory work will be facilitated by various switches and knobs for operating control of experimental parameters and by provisions for miscell neous control-signal sensing and generation. As a component of a larger system, the LINC will provide a basic memory, processor, magnetic ap , and monitoring and con rol apparatus in very flexible form. (Author)
