Probabilities and utilities are defined in terms of a person's preferences, in so far as these preferences satisfy certain consistency assumpti ns. The person's probabilities are defined in terms of chances, by an extension of the von Ne mann-Morgenstern theory (Princeton Univ. Press 2nd ed.; Chap. 3 and Appendix, 1947). (Author)
