A statement and proof of a theorem concerning the asymptotic stability in the large of the trivial solution of x = f (x, t) is presented. Two quality or performance indices, maximum overshoot and settling time are evaluated y using the theorem in conjunction with Lyapunov functions. The results are then applied by way of illustrative examples to two nonlinear control systems of second and third order respectively. The paper concludes with a discu sion of ways in which the evaluation of the performance index could be improved, for instance, by using different Lyapunov functions. (Author)
