THE DEFORMATION OF FILLED SHELLS DURING FIRING

Abstract

For fillers of the kinds so far studied (PBX simulant, inert filler D) no significant shell support is given by the filler in the vicinity of the rotating band in usual shell designs. This appears to be due largely to the facts that for fitted fillers the clearance re uired are on the order of the shell deflections and for poured fillers the shrinkage during casting is considerably greater than shell deflections. It appears that shell walls provide very little axial constraint to the filler. Therefore if the significant mechanical properties of a filler are known, a valid analysis of filler behavior should result from assuming the filler to be supported and accelerated by force transmitted through the base of the shell. Measurements can be satisfactorily made of strains in shells undergoing acceleration associated with muzzle velocities on the order of 1500 feet per second. (Author)
