MINIATURE THIN-FILM INDUCTORS

Abstract

Research is concerned with the development of a method for fabricating miniature inductors employing thin-film spiral configurations on ferrite substrates. The inductance range to be attained is from 38 microhenry to 1 mh with a minimum Q-value of 100 at a frequency of 1 mc per second. Effort was concentrated on two main tasks: (1) the review and possible selection of the best available ferrite substrate, and (2) the study of techniques for the formation of the desired inductor spiral pattern upon ferrite materials selected. A number of these inductors were fabricated, and measurements of the inductance achieved and its relation to similar air core inductances were calculated. Reasons for the limited inductance increase and methods for overcoming the limitations are discussed. (Author)
