THE REFLECTION OF RADIO WAVES FROM AN IRREGULAR IONOSPHERE

Abstract

INVESTIGATIONS WERE MADE OF THE REFLECTION OF RADIO WAVES FROM AN IRREGULAR IONOSPHERE. Research was extended to take account of strong scattering. Solutions of the wave equation for a horizontally stratified ionosphere are usedAS A STARTING POINT, AND THE EQUATIONS GOVERNING SCATTERING FOR A SIMPLE TWO-DIMENSIONAL MODEL ARE WRITTEN IN A COUPLED FORM. A ray theory of scattering is examined from a wave theory viewpoint, applied to scattering by an irregular layer of free electrons. Limited results of numerical work are exhibited in curves. Physical interpretations are presented of the mathematics outlined and useful approximations are given to help future work. (Author)
