THE CRYSTAL STRUCTURE OF SBC15.SO(C6H5)2

Abstract

The crystal structure of SbCl5.SO(C6H5)2 was determined from 3-dimensional X-ray data. The crystals were prepared from a mixture of a solution of 0.40g (C6H5)2SO dissolved in 30 ml CCl4 and a solution of 0.25 ml SbCl5 in 30 ml CCl4. The structure was made up of SbCl5.SO(C6H5)2 molecules, and coordination around the Sb atom was octahedral. The O and Sb atoms in (C6H5)2SO and SbCl5 functioned as donor and acceptor atoms, respectively. Coordinate, bond angle, and molecular distance data are given. The bond between the O and Sb atoms was weak. The stability of the addition compound was attributed to secondary effects.
