RADIOACTIVITY IN MAN, BEAST, AND FOOD

Abstract

Three main developments demonstrate anew the complexit of the question into the radioactivity of living beings: measure ent of the radium content of soft human tissues, detailed study of the alpha activity in man, animal, and food, late examination of radium victims from the early twenties and thirties, still alive 20 to 40 years after incorporation of the radioactive material with body radium contents several times higher than safe deposit. The data and figures presented in the above mentioned studies are discussed in their consequences for current ideas on radiation protection guides, dangers from low level radiation sources, such as fallout, radioactive waste disposal, and some of the radiations in space. The new findings will cause re-orientation and revision of presently accepted radiation standards. (Author)
