PROJECT NEPTUNE - INVESTIGATION OF THE COMMUNICATIONS POTENTIALITIES OF THE TRADE WIND INVERSION DUCT

Abstract

The communications potentialities of the trade wind inversion duct were explored by means ofAIR-TO-AIR AND AIR-TO-GROUND PROPAGATION LOSS MEASUREMENTS. These measurements were made in the trade wind regions of the North Atlantic and South Atlantic, as well as between the two regions. A meteorological analysis of radiosonde data for Puerto Rico and Dakar, Senegal in the North Atlantic was made prior to measurements in that area, to serve as a guide in carrying out the experimental program, and the results are shown. Flights were made between Recife, Brazil, Ascension Island, and Luanda, Angola in the South Atlantic, and between Recife and Dakar for cross coupling measurements. The report describes the objectives, project planning, the instrumentation of the two P2V-5 aircraft used in the program, the operational program carried out, and gives some sample results of the measurements. Detailed analysis of the data accumulated is to be carried out under a later contract. (Author)
