ESTABLISHMENT OF THE POTENTIAL OF FLAKE REINFORCED COMPOSITES AS ENGINEERING STRUCTURAL MATERIALS

Abstract

An analysis of the moment distribution on a uniformly loaded circular plate with edges overhanging the support is presented. The equations developed are used to calculate the maximum tensile stress and deflection in such a loaded plate. These equations are intended for the evaluation of the flexural strength of flake reinforced plastic laminates under biaxial stress. The notched tensile strength of flake laminates is reported. The results are interpreted in terms of built-in stress raisers caused by local variations in the distribution of flake. Tensile stress at root of the notch has reac ed a level of 58,000 psi.
