Thirty boreholes were drilled from 18 August to 4 September 1958 at various locations throughout the island on which the town of Fort Simpson, N. W. T. is located. One-third of the boreholes were associated with the construction of a hostel for the Department of Northern Affairs and National Resources; the remainder were locat d in areas where the land-clearing dates, some extending back to the nineteenth century, were known. The occurrence of a gravelly stratum encountered at depths from 20 to 30 feet below the ground surface restricted the depths of the boreholes. Soil sampling was not carried out at each borehole but enough samples were taken at random locations and depths to describe the soil types adequately. Land use history, the occurrence of permafrost, and the soils at the borehole locations are described. (Author)
