CRACK INITIATION IN METALLIC MATERIALS

Abstract

The study is aimed at correlating the fundamental properties of materials obtainable from tensile, bend, combined stress state tests and metallographic and X-ray diffraction studies to the initiation of fracture in the presence of a notch or a crack. The experimental program will therefore consist of two phases (which can be conducted simultaneously); (1) study of the fundamental properties, and (2) fracture initiation studies in the presence of notches and cracks. Both phases will be conducted on high purity W recrystallized to several grain sizes and tested at various temperatures to study the effects of ductility. (Author)
