THE INFLUENCE OF ENZYME SUPPLEMENTATION ON THE DIGESTIBILITY OF ALGAE

Abstract

Several amylolytic enzymes and enzyme preparations were added to diets in which algae served as the sole protein source. Digestibility of the dietary nitrogen by young rats was determined. Of the enzymes tested, diastase and alpha amylase produced the greatest improvement, cellulase and Nopgro also improved digestibility. Hemicellulase and Hydralase PH were without effect. When the digestibility values were corrected for the non-protein nitrogen of algae, and the assumption made that this nitrogen was unavailable, the protein of diets supplemented with diastase and alpha amylase was s digestible as casein.
