HIGH ENERGY RATE EXTRUSION

Abstract

An investigation into the parameters associated with Dynapak extrusion has been undertaken. Results have been obtained on lubrication, billet end geometry, die entrance angle, reduction ratio and temperature. Volume of material extruded vs power requirements for Ti alloy, 304 stainless steel and type 4340 steel at the various temperatures and reduction ratios are presented. The problem of inertial separation is analyzed and data along with the calculation of the factors that effect this phenomenon are shown. A brief description is given of the instrumentation used for measuring velocities and forces. Nine ft of Al and 6 ft of Ti were extruded in the form of 50-mil T sections. (Author)
