DEVELOPMENT OF EXO-REACTANT INORGANIC ADHESIVE SYSTEM

Abstract

The refinement of the Cu and Ag based exothermic adhesive systems for overlap bonding, fabricating overlap specimens specified in the contract was completed. The development of an exothermic adhesive composition and associated procedures for honeycomb panel bonding continued. Stainless steel lap shear strengths using Ag base exotherms were consistently abo ve 5300 psi with most failures in the stainless parent metal, the average strength being 9173 psi. No appreciable change in strength was noted up to 600 F. At 800 F this average was 8941 psi. Bend tests demonstrated the bonds were metallic, with little or no included glass. Honeycomb core cell bonding to skins was achieved but core cell burn through, although greatly reduced, still remained a problem. (Author)
