A NEW FACILITY FOR THE STUDY OF AIRCRAFT DYNAMICS

Abstract

The first of the author's two purposes was to acquaint the helicopter and vertical-take-offand-landing engineer and designer with the use of this new model flight facility as an effective and practical tool to economically evaluate, modify, and perfect his designs. The second is to present the design philosophy and the experience accumulated during its development to provide the basis on which other, perhaps more sophisticated facilities of this nature can be designed and constructed. The physical plant and equipment are described in detail. A discussion on the design of the horizontal and vertical servomechanisms is presented. The design and construction of the models used in the facility are discussed briefly. Operating techniques used in the esting of a helicopter model, a vertical takeoff aircraft model, and a ground effect machine model are discussed and typical samples of the data obtained are included. A large number of photographs give a complete graphical description of the apparatus. The preliminary information available from the facility has shown this new technique and apparatus to be highly effective in obtaining direct quantitative data on the dynamic stability of flying or proposed designs for helicopters, vertical or short takeoff craft.
