Abstract

The transformation from center of mass to laboratory s stem of two colli ing bodies is discussed in detail, including a derivation of the Jacobian. The scattering cross section in the laboratory system is then defined for all lab. angles. Then, a formal integral can be written which averages over a distribution of target velocities, giving an effective cross section as a function of the distribution (which in turn is usually a function of temperature). No actual calculations are carried out because of the exceedingly complex formulas which have to be manipulated. (Author)
