STRESS-CORROSION CRACKING OF HIGH-STRENGTH STAINLESS STEELS IN ATMOSPHERIC ENVIRONMENTS
Abstract
Available information on the stress-corrosion cracking of the high strength stainless steels was assembled and tabulated according to alloy type and to the environments to which they were exposed. The stainless steels include the coldrolled austenitics (USS 12 MoV) the martensitic grades (17-4PH and stainless W) the martensitic precipitation-hardenable grades (17-7PH, PH 15-7 Mo, AM 350 and 355) and the semiaustenitic precipitation hardenable grades (AISI 301, 201, and 202, USS Tenelon, and USS 17-5). Exposures were in the marine atmosphere at Kure Beach, outdoors at several semiindustrial locations, and in several laboratory test environments. Data on the chemical analyses, heat treatments, and mechanical properties of the test materials are included.
