(*Alkali metal compounds, *Halide , L ITHIUM COMPOUNDS, Chlorides, Hydrides.) The importance of t e virial theorem for the cohesive energies of solids is discussed. An interpr t tion of the cohe ive energy independe t of any particular model is proposed, taking into ccount he increase in he kinetic energy which follows when a compound is formed. Th e pirical co esive energies of the alkali halides obtained from the Born-Hab r cycle are used in making this interpretation, and a comparison is made with alternative interpretations. The quantum mechanical treatment of the cohesive energy is also discussed. A detailed numerical study has bee carried out for LiCl. (Author)
