A FUNDAMENTAL INVESTIGATION OF THE ALLOYING BEHAVIOR OF THE RARE EARTHS AND RELATED METALS

Abstract

The vapor pressures of the rare-earth metals, Pr and Nd, were determined in the temperature range of 1724 to 1874K and 1638 to 1791K, respectively, by the Knudsen effusion method. The heats of vaporization of Pr and Nd, respectively, as calculated from the slopes of the vapor-pr ssure plot , r lta UB V equal 84.42 + or - 1.94 kcal/mole and 84.06 + or 2.21 kcal/mole. A tentative phase diagram for the binary system Pr-Nd, was established by roomtemperature metallography and thermal analysis. Complete soli solubility in both the low-temperatur and high-temperature phases occurs. The densities of a series of alloys were determined by the displacement method at room temperature. A plot of molal volume of solution versus mole fraction indicates that the solution approaches ideality. The Knudsen effusion study of activities of alloys of Pr and d is curr ntly in progress.
