Nutrition and Radiation Injury: An Annotated Bibliography

Abstract

The increased use of nuclear power in peaceful pursuits and as a potential instrument of war makes the problem of radiation injury an important consideration for all persons. Methods for mitigating the systemic effects of exposure to radiation have been sought since the early application of therapeutic doses in the medical field. Most of these early studies were clinical rather than laboratory and confounded by patient variables. With the advent of atomic warfare, efforts in this direction were intensified with major emphasis on the search for gents exerting protective effects against acutely lethal doses of radiation. Although these studies were essentially pharmacologic, careful measurements of metabolic patterns were included. This was followed by the considerations of the prophylactic role nutrition may have in radiation sickness.
