LONG-RANGE ORDER IN FE-AL ALLOYS. III. A RESISTOMETRIC STUDY OF ORDERING KINETICS IN FE3A1

Abstract

The ordering kinetics of the oichiometric Fe3Al. The ordering rate has been found to depend on the temperature of prior quenching and on the degree of cold work. The results have been satisfactorily analyzed in terms of an excess quenchedin vacancy concentration that decays exponentially with time. The vacancy lif imes t 260 C ere found to vary from 10 minutes to 650 minutes as the degree of recrystallization increased. A ten-fold reduction in the time to complete/ o rically studied for nearly stoichiometric Fe3Al. A ten-fold reduction in the time to complete ordering was obtained by increasing the quenching temperature from 600 C to 900 C. An activation energy for vacancy forma ion of 0.75 ev was obtained.
