TWENTY YEARS OF SONAR CALIBRATION METHODS
Abstract
IN 1941, THERE EXISTED A NEGLIGIBLE CAPABILITY FOR ANYONE TO CALIBRATE AN UNDERWATER SOUND TRANSDUCER. With the invention of the reciprocity method of calibration and the impetus provided by World War II, the art and science of sonar calibration methods developed rapidly. During the years after World War II, the theory and practice of calibration methods have become ever broader in scope. A chronology of this development from 1941 to 1961, and the role of the Navy Underwater Sound Reference Laboratory in it, is presented.
