MECHANISM OF EXCITATION OF SPECTRAL LINES IN A HIGH-TEMPERATURE VACUUM OVEN

Abstract

Line reversal was used to show that the atoms in a high-temperature vacuum oven have an equilibrium distribution over the excited levels. The temperature deduced from the distribution is the same as the measured temperature of the oven wall (within the errors of experiment). It is deduced that the excitation is purely thermal under these conditions. (Author)
