THE ELECTRIFICATION OF DROPS DURING ATOMIZATION OF LIQUIDS AS A RESULT OF FLUCTUATIONS IN THE ION DISTRIBUTION

Abstract

A calculation of the magnitude of the fluctuation charges in liquids containing ions is given. The electrification of drops during atomization of liquids in the region of ion concentrations from 1 x 10 to the -11th power to 3 x 10 to the -9th power mole/liter for drops with radii from 0.5 to 2 microns is studied. The results agree with the fluctuation theory of the origin of the charges on atomized drops. A new method of non-electrochemical determination of the ion concentration (the ionic strength) in dielectric liquids is proposed. (Author)
