ASYMPTOTIC FORMULAS AND COMPUTATIONAL METHODS FOR SPHEROIDAL WAVE FUNCTIONS

Abstract

Prolate radial functions are pres nted for which a considerable number of formulas are included. Spheroidal wave functions correspond to combinations of extreme values of the geometric parameter, defining the eccentricity of a spheroidal surface, and of two wavelength par meters, measuring the ratio of wavelength to the minor axis a to the major axis. Functions computed by the various formulas are compared graphically with tabulated values. It is shown that with the aid of these formulas adequate approximations can be obtained except for a comparatively restricted range of par meters. A brief discussion is devoted to oblate spheroidal functions. (Author)
