RESEARCH ON PHASE EQUILIBRIA BETWEEN BORON OXIDES AND REFRACTORY OXIDES INCLUDING SILICON AND ALUMINUM OXIDES

Abstract

Phase relationships of the ternary system Al2O3-B203-SiO2 were determined by a modified quenching technique and solid-state sintering reactions. No ternary compounds were detected in the B2O3-rich portion. Relations near the SiO2-B2O3; side are in part derived from tentative results obtained in independent studies. Attempts to synthesize sillimanite (Al203.SiO2) with the aid of B2O3 flux yielded results which cast doubt on the success claimed for such synthesis. (Author)
