REPORT ON RAW DATA OF THE BALLOON FLIGHT OF AUGUST 21-22, 1961

Abstract

DESCRIPTORS: (*Spaceships, Space flight, Lunar probes, Space probes, Electric propul sion, Nuclear propulsion, Control, Control system , Guidance, Ion rockets. Conditions and methods of control and guidance are discussed for a nuclear-electric spacecraft propelled by an ion motor. Conceptual studies of nuclear-electric spacecraft revealed areas in the guidance and control field where engineering decisions are necessary. Early implementation of the concepts appears to require no scientific breakthroughs but rather orderly engineering extension and application of current state of the art. The direction of some advances are outlined. (Author)
