PROTECTION OF NIOBIUM AGAINST OXIDATION AT ELEVATED TEMPERATURES

Abstract

A mechanism is proposed for the oxidation of a series of Nb-Zr and Nb-Zr-Ti alloys in air at temperatures above 700 C. It is based on the mode of nucleation of alpha Zr from oxygensaturated beta solid solution. Metallographic and x-ray diffractometric techniques were used in the formulation of the proposed mechanism.
