Abstract

A study of the second somatic area of the cerebral cortex in the cat was made using the method of single unit analysis. Cells of the anterior portion of this area possess properties that are lemniscal in nature, resembling those of the first somatic area. Cells of more posterior parts of this area possess properties similar to those of the posterior nuclear group of the thalamus; they are neither mode nor place specific; and auditory and somatic inputs interact upon them. Clear evidence was obtained that the somatic sub-mode of pain projects upon the second somatic area. Part of the study dealt with the design and construction of an automatic datareducing system for neurophysiological investigations. The system allows automatic meas rement of intervals be ween nerve impulses, preserves the temporal order of the data, labels each interval measured in re its relation to sensory stimuli, and presents data readout ready for computer input.
