FURTHER STUDIES OF CLUSTERING IN THE RECALL OF NOUNS EMBEDDED DURING PRESENTATION IN SENTENCES

Abstract

An experiment was carried out which, with modifications in procedure, was in part an essential repetition of an earlier one. Noun clustering in recall was studied as a function of sentence context during presentation. As compared with suitable controls, the clustering in recall of strongly clustering, categorized nouns was found to be adversely affected by the sentence context. This was in agreement with the earlier experiment. An attempt was made to accentuate the sentence context factor by reducing the category clustering tendency of the nouns employed. This was done by using nouns of weak category clustering tendency. (Author)
