Paratuberculosis (Johne's Disease) in the Monkey (Macaca Mulatta),
Abstract
Johne's disease or paratuberculosis is caused by the acid-fast organism Mycobacterium paratuberculosis and is known to affect cattle, sheep and goats. IT HAS A PROLONGED COURSE CHARACTERIZED BY DIARRHEA, EMACIATION, AND EVENTUALLY DEATH. The recognition of paratuberculosis in the monkey provides another specific cause of simian enteric disease which should be considered when the general problem of diarrhea and dysentery in the monkey are considered. Estimates of incidence vary from 2.5 to 25 percent, depending on the criteria used. The disease is more readily demonstrable and perhaps more important in older monkeys, but the prolonged natural course of the disease suggests that it may well be contracted at an early age. (Author)
