WINDOWS INTO THE UNKNOWN

Abstract

This article deals with some achievements of the Siberian Branch of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. The Hydrodynamics Department is working on problems of peaceful explosions to be used in prospecting and in building dams and embankments. The Novosibirsk river port was deepened by means of underwater explosions, and work is being done on the Angara River. The Department has also developed a water cannon to be used in mining. New geophysical apparatus was developed: this is used in aerial surveying of mineral deposits, increasing the reconnaissance output 300-fold.
