A METHOD TO REDUCE PARACHUTE INFLATION TIME WITH A MINOR INCREASE OF OPENING FORCE

Abstract

A short openi g time nd a moderate opening force are desirable charac ristics in practically all parac ute applications. A method was devised for which, in wind tunnel t s s the dur tion of the initial pha e of the inflation has been reduced, wh rea the final phase, during which the maximum force occurs, remains basically unc nged. h op ning time was reduced with an insignificant increase of opening force. e time reductio under this condition is greatest for parachute types which have a charac eristic lly long initial phase. For the solid flat and the extended skirt parachutes, the openi g time as reduced by 27 and 18%, respectively. The opening force of the solid flat p rachute increa 10% and remained practically u changed for extende skirt parachute. (Author)
