STRESS INVESTIGATION OF THE BURSTER CONTAINER FOR THE 155MM M121 VX PROJECTILE

Abstract

A stress analysis was conducted to determine the metal parts security of the 155mm M121 VX projectile, with close burster container. It was found that the burster container was stressed beyond yield, allowing elongation and buckling. Although the container becomes externally supported by the casing before the elongation is sufficient to cause rupture, the resultant distortion of the explosive filler is considered hazardous and a possible cause of premature detonation.
