THE POTENTIATION OF OPIATE INDUCED ANALGESIA BY STIMULANT DRUGS. I. THE EFFECT OF MONOAMINE OXIDASE INHIBITORS AND CAFFEINE

Abstract

An experiment was performed to test the hpothtenerexcitement or an inhibition of Mono Amine Oxidase was thmechaism hich mphetamine potentiates an opiate induced analgesia. odewainistered alone or in combinations with amphetamine, iproniazid, caffeine, PH, anJB 835 to rats. Analgesia was tested using a jump threshold procedure.heults showed that codeine plus amphetamine potentiated analgesia and that codeine plus caffeine antagonized analgesia. None of the other combions i effct. These results are interpreted as failing to support either the hypothesis of general excitement or that of MAO inhibition as the mchanofminpotentiation effect.
