HYPERSONIC ABLATION AND INTERPRETATION OF TEST RESULTS

Abstract

Simulation parameters for steady state hypersonic ablation are discussed for several different classes of ablating materials. The difference in test results obtained in different facilities was explained. The information required to correlate results from different test facilities with each other are: (1) the stagnation enthalpy of the test gas, (2) the surface temperature of the ablating material, (3) the heat transfer rate to a non-ablating surface at the ablation temperature, (4) the radiant energy emitted from the ablating surface, and (5) the mass rate of ablated material. Proper interpretation of test results and the use of theory enabled the prediction of the flight performance of ablating materials. (Author)
