A VARIATIONAL PRINCIPLE SIMPLIFIED

Abstract

This report compiles existing mterian tharianal method in electromagnetic scattering problems, to present it in a form readily diged thosehavingreasonably good training in advanced calcus andn eleentary knowledge of Maxwell's equations. The first part of the report discussh l ols nded to develop the variational formula. Tese a calclus of variations, Green's function for the scalar Helmholtz equation, and tensanalyis. The second part applies these ideas to derive the dyadic Green's function and an integral equation for the scattered field. From the integral equation, a stationary expression for the scattered field is derived, a theria-onal formula for the backscattering cross section is then obtained. (Author)
