LIQUID SHEAR TRANSMISSION, APPENDIX 9
Abstract
IT APPEARS THAT A LIQUID SHEAR TRANSMISSION CAN BE DEVELOPED, HOWEVER, ITS RELIABILITY IS QUESTIONABLE IN THE 15,000 HP RANGE. The minimum film thickness is of the order of 10 times 10 to the-6th power inches. Any dirt, thermal or pressure distortions would effect the performance of this transmission. Fluid shear transmissions in the order of hundreds of horsepower are quite feasible and reliable. The weight of this type of transmission is quite low. (Author)
