RESEARCH INVESTIGATIONS LEADING TO THE DEVELOPMENT AND EVALUATION OF A CADMIUM - SILVER OXIDE BATTERY HAVING A HERMETICALLY SEALED CONSTRUCTION
Abstract
An accelerated method of evaluating separator materials is described with data presented on 7 different combinations of insulating materials.Analysis of cycle life test data on fully assembled elements disclose that multiple layers of a separator of the membrane type will be required. Capacity efficiency measurements of positive and negative active materials revealed the positive to be considerably more efficient than the negative plate. Factors affecting recombination of oxygen and cadmium in a sealed cell construction are presented with a discussion of data revealing the importance of controlling the volume of electrolyte in assuring satisfactory recombination. Environmental testing at high and low temperatures on complete assemblies were conducted. Retention-of-charge testing indicated a progressive greater rate of self-discharge as stand temperature increased. (Author)
