THERMAL EFFECTS ON PLASMA DISPERSION RELATION BY SUPERPOSITION OF STREAMS

Abstract

The derivation of the thermal effects on the dispersion relation for the propagation of both transverse and longitudinal waves in an unbounded, collisionless plasma is derived in a consistent and straightforward manner by the method of superposition of streams. The assumptions made are explicit, and the applicability to other more particular cases is obvious. A comparison is made with results obtained by otherAUTHORS, AND THE DIFFERENCES, WHERE THEY OCCUR, ARE EXPLAINED. The relationship of this method with a more common method is pointed out, together with pitfalls to be avoided. (Author)
