Abstract

Hydrogen atoms and o her free radicals were produced by gamma-irradiation of a number of substances at 4.2 K. El ctron spin resonance was employed for detection and study of the free radicals within the solids t t is emp rature S TRONG ELECTRON SPIN RE ONA CE SIGNALS OF H atoms could then b pro uced by dosages of one million r or less in H2O, HF, H2, a d C 4, but no H atom signals could thus be produced in HC1, H2S, NH3, NaH, or LiH. It was concluded th t in HF an H2O the H atoms are form d from electro capture by the essentially ionic hydrogens rather than be removal of an electron from the olecule (ionization). Becuas this process does not require isplacem nt of h atoms from their original sites in the lattice, it can take place in hard-frozen, rigid solids. In H2, CH4, and similar sub tances t production of H ATOMS REQUIRES THE BREAKING OF COVALENT BONDS. T HIS PROCESS, ALTHOUGH INITIATED BY IONIZATION, PPEARS TO REQUIRE ALSO THE DISPLACEMENT OF THE H from its original site i t e lat ice. (Author)
