DEVELOPMENT OF FLEXIBLE POLYMERS AS THERMAL INSULATION IN SOLID-PROPELLANT ROCKET MOTORS

Abstract

Modifications of a novalac epoxy resin were investigated. Only one modification yielded a cured flexible resin. Thirty and 40% castor oil modified formulations containing 20% potassium oxalate and 10% asbestos powder were prepared. Seven asbestos-filled epoxy resins were tested in the oxyacetylene torch. The best performing material contained 40% asbestos fiber. Oxyacetylene torch test data showed that 2 or 3 layers of Pluton cloth on the exposed face of a 40% asbestos filled formulation resulted in some increase in insulation effectiveness. Nine asbestos-filled epoxy resins were tested in solid propellant rocket motors. A flexible polyurethane resin was prepared by reacting 23 parts of toluene diisocyanate and 77 parts of castor oil. Two commercially available, filled polyurethanes were tested in the oxyacetylene torch. The results showed them to be poor insulators. However, static motor firing of these 2 materials and 2 other polyurethanes showed a reasonably low char rate of around 4.3 mils/sec. (Author)
