THE FORMATION OF THE DAYTIME PEAK OF THE IONOSPHERIC F2 LAYER

Abstract

The physical processes occurring in the F2 layer of the ionosphere are discussed. A simplified model, in which the loss region for the ionization has a sharp upper boundary, is shown to give a layer, having a defined maximum, due to production and diffusive transport alone. The complete continuity equation for ionization is an isothermal atmosphere, nearly transparent to the ionizing radiation, is solved explicitly in terms of Lommel functions. Comparison of the complete solution with the simplified model mentioned above, indicates that the simplified model gives sufficiently accurate results for heights at and above the layer maximum.
