EXPLORATION AND EVALUATION OF NEW GLASSES IN FIBER FORM

Abstract

The prime objective of the program is the examination of the length effect on strength properties of glass fibers based on the statistical analysis reported on NRL 5098, and to determine the strongest fiber for particular applications. Further objectives are the evaluation of new glass fibers and the investigation of the short fiber staple effect. Fibers of Solar glass compositions were tested by the dead weight method. For fiber diameters between 0.002 and 0.00065 in., breaking strength was between 38,000 and 290,000 psi for fiber lengths of 2 and 3/4 in., respectively. (Author)
