APPROXIMATION FOR BACKSCATTER FROM A DIELECTRIC SPHERE

Abstract

Approximations for determining the echo area of dielectric bodies are discussed. The fundamental approximation consists of a relatively simple treatment of the front face reflection and the rear face reflection. When applied to spheres for which epsilon sub r is less than 1 and for certain spheres of dielectric constant 1 is less than epsilon sub r is less than 2 the approximations yield results which are in excellent agreement with the exact solution. The value of this approximate solution is that it may be applied to dielectric bodies of more general shape than the sphere. (A UTHOR)
