HAPTENIC PROPERTIES OF PARALYTIC SHELLFISH POISON

Abstract

The serological data collected to date on the immunogenic properties of diazotized PSP-protein conjugates reveal that these materials are capable of eliciting antibody production in rabbits which may be demonstrated by precipitin reactions, inhibition tests, skin tests, and complement fixation tests. The results indicate that the common moiety, among antigens composed of PSP conjugated to different proteins, is the altered PSP resulting from diazotization. None of several serological techniques employed provided conclusive evidence that antibodies to native PSP had been produced. Antibodies to diazotized PSP were demonstrated by means of inhibition, complement fixation and skin tests. Studies on the reactivity of PSP with aromatic diazonium salt have been further investigated, and procedures are described for the synthesis of PSP-biphenyl-ovalbumin and biphenyl-ovalbumin.
