FACTOR STRUCTURE OF SEMANTIC DIFFERENTIAL RESPONSES TO VISUAL FORMS AND PREDICTION OF FACTOR SCORES FROM STRUCTURAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE STIMULI

Abstract

Two samples of nonsense shapes, containing 36 and 32 stimuli respectively, were judged on 20 semantic differential scales. Separate factor analyses and rotations produced highly similar factor structures for the two samples and the total group. Four fact rs were obtained, representing dimensions of complexity-activity, esthetic-evaluation, size-potency, and hardnessangularity. Multiple regression solutions, predicting factor scores from physical measurements, indicated better prediction for the sample in which symmetry and curvature were varied. (Author)
