LITTORAL MATERIALS OF THE SOUTH SHORE OF LONG ISLAND, NEW YORK

Abstract

Physical characteristics of littoral materials, which are present and have influenced the development of the south shore of Long Island, are treated in broad scope. Statistical parameters of median diameter, sorting and skewness, describing the beach and bottom sediments, are presented for comparable zones of the profile and comparable survey periods at all locations where such data are available. A limited amount of data on such physical properties as mineral composition, roundness and sphericity of grains, specific gravity and mass density are also tabulated for the limited areas where they are available. Interrelation of these sedimentary properties and their relationship to geographic location are also investigated. (Author)
