LIFETIME OF THE EXCITED F-CENTER

Abstract

Because of the strong absorption of the F-band in alkali halide crystals, it was assumed that the radiative lifetime of the excited state would be of the order of that for an allowed atomic transition. It is the purpose of this analysis to report direct measurements of this lifetime, showing that it is of the order of 10 to the -6 power/sec. It also will be shown how measurements of photoconductivity, luminescence, and lifetime may be used to obtain interesting information about the excited states of the Fcenter. (Author)
